New addition to Robolab: F-GT racing simulator cockpit – AI Lab

#artificialintelligence

We have added the Next Level Racing F-GT simulator cockpit to our lab. Together with the Logitech G920 steering wheel and pedal, they allow us to drive in the Carla simulator comfortably. This comes handy for data collection in our autonomous driving research. We certainly need a larger screen for our set up. More details will be shared soon.

PowerToys now tells you which app is blocking file deletion

PCWorld

How often have you been in the middle of clearing off your desktop by deleting a bunch of unused files, only for Windows to tell you that it's in use by another program? Except that Windows often doesn't tell you which program is using it, so you shrug like John Travolta in that one Pulp Fiction scene. The latest addition to the immanently useful PowerToys collection can fix that problem. The File Locksmith tool is available in the latest version of the program, v0.64.0. Using the tool is super easy.

The New Addition to the US Arsenal: Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

It may sound like something out of a science-fiction flick, but the US Air Force recently announced that it has now embedded artificial intelligence (AI) into its targeting operations – and that's not a drill. According to Frank Kendall, Secretary of the Air Force, AI algorithms were deployed into a live operational kill chain. Kendall, however, did not disclose whether this was done by a human pilot or a remote-controlled drone. Likewise, nothing was mentioned regarding the possible loss of human life. It's a development that is raising some serious questions regarding the ethical merits and moral consequences of using technology in warfare. A kill chain is, essentially, the structure of an attack.

AI, the future of work and how to improve the safety and security of the workforce

#artificialintelligence

In less than two years, the workplace has evolved quickly. Our personal space inside our homes has transformed into a makeshift office, while corporate buildings are vacant and underutilised. As vaccines continue to roll out, a hybrid work model has emerged, with staff now alternating and'taking turns' being back in the office. In the US, research done by SHRM.org highlights that 55% of the workforce favours a hybrid workforce post-pandemic. In the UK, a survey by PWC found 77% of UK employees want a mix of face-to-face and remote working.

Windows 10 May 2020 Update review: Microsoft boosts Linux and Your Phone, but Cortana slips hard

PCWorld

Update, 05/27/2020: Microsoft launched the May 2020 update on May 27, through manual download first, or you can just wait for Microsoft to push it to your PC. Our review of Microsoft's Windows 10 20H1 update--also known as version 2004, or the Windows 10 May 2020 Update--shows an OS focused primarily on building out existing features, rather than launching new ones. Some scaffolding is still apparent in tweaks to Your Phone, and especially Cortana. Microsoft has further polished Task Manager, Settings, and Game Bar, however, and isn't afraid to serve niche audiences with upgrades to the Windows Subsystem for Linux and the related Terminal app. As in the past, we've based our review on the Insider builds of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, beginning with the major features and working through to its minor additions.

Chinese AI companies targeted with new additions to US blacklist

#artificialintelligence

Donald Trump's latest salvo against China threatens to derail a $1 billion coming-out party for a prominent startup backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., while curtailing the country's broader ambitions of leading artificial intelligence in the coming decade. The US placed eight Chinese technology giants on a US blacklist on Monday, accusing them of being implicated in human rights violations against Muslim minorities in the country's far-western region of Xinjiang. Among those singled out for sweeping American export restrictions were SenseTime Group Ltd., the world's largest AI startup, and Megvii Technology Ltd. -- two giant enterprises Beijing is counting on to spearhead advances into a revolutionary technology, aided by billions of dollars in foreign backing. The White House's actions -- announced days before sensitive trade negotiations resume in Washington -- cast a pall over not just Megvii's capital-raising effort but the burgeoning Chinese sector. Leading players like SenseTime and Megvii, already having trouble securing financing during an economic downturn, had considered international forays to sustain a sizzling pace of growth.

How to design for clarity when things aren't clear at all

#artificialintelligence

This past weekend, data visualization, and specifically data visualization around depicting uncertainty, got a bit of national attention. As someone who designs with data and uncertainty, this was very exciting to me (not to mention it gave me a way to talk to my family about what I do!) On Wednesday President Trump spoke in front of reporters holding up a map of the approaching Hurricane Dorian. The reason this became a news items on its own is that the map had been altered from its original form. A map of the gulf coast that originally had a cone-shaped graphic mapping the potential path of the hurricane now had a new addition -- an extra bulbous bump. The new addition was immediately suspicious, and there are a couple of obvious reasons why.

Walmart Announces A New Addition To Its Workforce: Thousands Of Robots

#artificialintelligence

A new tech trend has emerged at the world's largest retailer, as Walmart brings on board thousands of robots in nearly 5,000 of its 11,348 stores. According to CNN Business, these robots will be scrubbing floors, scanning boxes, unloading trucks and tracking shelf inventory at mostly domestic U.S. locations. Robots will replace lower-level jobs--serving in janitorial functions as well as performing basic inventory work--in order to manage rising costs. A new robot unloader has already been used on the docks in hundreds of stores, pulling boxes from delivery trucks while automatically scanning and sorting merchandise. The unloader will be deployed at over 1,100 retail locations in the near future.
